Chelmsford, Essex -travel information and accommodation
Situated in the centre of Essex is the County Town of Chelmsford. The history of Chelmsford is well documented as a Roman town with plenty of Roman relics in the local museum to back this up. Chelmsford has also been referred to as a market town for generations thanks to King John, when in 1199 he granted the area the right to hold weekly markets on a Friday, a tradition that still holds true today.
Another important era in history for the region is that it was the national seat of Government, even if it was only for a few days, when in 1381 Richard II regained power following the Peasants Revolt, that had spread to Chelmsford but was finally ended in nearby Billericay.
Chelmsford’s other claim to fame is as the birthplace of radio, thanks to the work of Guglielmo Marconi. Marconi sent out the first ever wireless signals across the Atlantic back in 1901 as a result of the research and work carried out at his factory in the former silk mill in Chelmsford, that acted as the world’s first radio factory.
Today the highlight of Chelmsford’s
social calendar is its summer music festival held
every August, in the glorious setting of the grounds
of Hylands House. Each year a range of performers take
to the stage and in the past great names such as
Robbie Williams and Michael Ball have taken part in
the festivities.
