Hyland House is a grand Grade II listed building, located on the outskirts of Chelmsford. It was sadly let fall into a state of disrepair after its owner died in 1996. However, the fortunes of the house where turned around when it was purchased by Chelmsford Borough Council. Restoration is now near completion but visitors can already visit this glorious house to view its many treasures and learning about its interesting history.
Chelmsford is the proud home of one of the Royal Horticultural Society’s many gardens and as such Hyde Hall is a riot of colour during the spring and summer months, providing endless inspiration to both amateur and professional gardeners, over an area spanning 20 acres. Events, including a variety of guided walks, are organised throughout the year and there’s also a visitor’s centre, garden centre and garden library to keep you occupied.
To find out more about the Chelmsford area simply take a trip to the Chelmsford Museum where you will find a wealth of information dating right back to prehistoric times. What’s more there’s is no admission charge making it the ideal place to take the whole family for an interesting yet inexpensive day out.
A great way to while away an afternoon or evening whatever you age is to try out the Megabowl, located on Chelmsford’s Widford Industrial Estate. Ten Pin bowling is great fun and at a centre such as Megabowl everything has been made easy, from shoe hire to refreshments, and it’s a pastime the great British weather can’t spoil.
Proud Essex brewers since 1842, the Ridleys Brewery is a family run business based in Hartford End, on the banks of the River Chelmer. Here there is an on-site pub known as The Clockhouse where you can sample the local beer, but to really appreciate what goes into producing the perfect pint book yourself onto one of their brewery tours that will give you a great insight into this ancient tradition.
